WHAT IT DOES

Everything you need to document a process

Capture every click

Smart capture watches the shared screen and creates a step each time the screen changes, so each click becomes a step without you pressing anything. The screenshot is taken from just before the change, so it shows what to click rather than what happened afterwards.

Record and pick the exact frame

Record a walkthrough, then choose the precise frame for each step from a frame accurate timeline. Drag a step marker to change its frame at any time.

Annotate properly

Callouts, speech bubbles, arrows, shapes, highlights, numbered badges, text, a synthetic mouse pointer with click effects, a magnifier that really enlarges part of the screenshot, blur, redaction and a spotlight.

Keep your brand

Set fonts, a colour palette, heading styles and default shape styles once, save them as a brand file, then reuse or share that file across guides.

Choose the page format

Start as a 16:9 deck or switch to A4, Letter, Legal, 4:3 or a custom size. Content reflows between slide and document layouts, and you can drag text, images and shapes anywhere on a page.

Export where your readers are

HTML for a knowledge base, PDF for printing, Word for editing, PowerPoint for training, SCORM for an LMS, Markdown for a docs site, or images for a ticket reply.

Nothing leaves your device

Useful when the screens you document contain customer data, internal systems or anything under an NDA. There is no upload step to review with your security team.

No sign up

Open the page and start. Nothing to install, no seat to buy, no trial to expire.

HOW IT WORKS

From a screen recording to a finished guide

  1. Share your screen. Pick a window, a tab or the whole screen. Sharing a window or a tab keeps the recorder controls out of the picture entirely.
  2. Do the task once. Smart capture creates a step each time the screen changes, so you do not need to stop and press a button. You can also capture manually, on a timer, or record video and pull the frames out afterwards.
  3. Write and annotate. Each step gets a title and description. Add callouts, arrows, numbers and highlights, blur anything sensitive, and magnify the detail that matters.
  4. Lay it out. Choose 16:9 slides or an A4 document. Add a cover, a contents page, objectives, a summary or an appendix, and drag elements where you want them.
  5. Export and share. Send a PDF, hand over a Word file, upload a SCORM package to your LMS, or paste Markdown into your docs.

Open the tool and try it on something small first, such as resetting a password.

CHOOSING A TOOL

How this compares with paid step guide tools

Tools such as Scribe popularised automatic step capture. This is a free, browser based alternative that covers the same core job: capture a process, produce a written guide with screenshots, and share it. It is worth being straight about where it differs, so you can judge whether it fits.

Where this tool is a good fit

  • You want a guide without paying per seat or creating an account.
  • The screens you capture contain sensitive data and you would rather nothing was uploaded.
  • You need file exports: PDF, Word, PowerPoint or a SCORM package for an LMS.
  • You want a screen recording and a written guide from the same session.
  • You want control over branding, page size and layout.

Where a hosted product may suit you better

  • You want guides hosted at a shareable link with analytics on who read them, rather than files you distribute.
  • Several people need to co-edit the same guide at once.
  • You want an organisation wide library with permissions and approval workflows.
  • You need automatic text redaction across every screenshot, or capture on mobile devices.
  • You want support with a service level agreement.

Feature sets and pricing of commercial products change often, so check the current details on their own site before deciding.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is this step by step guide maker free?

Yes. Every feature described on this page is free to use and there is no account to create. There is no watermark on what you produce and no limit on the number of guides you make.

Are my screenshots or recordings uploaded anywhere?

No. Screen capture, editing and every export happen inside your browser using local code. Your guide is stored in your own browser storage on your device, so nothing is sent to a server. That also means clearing your browser data removes your saved guides, so export anything you want to keep.

Do I need to install an extension?

No. The tool runs in the browser on its own. An optional Chrome extension adds a global keyboard shortcut and true click detection inside browser tabs, which is useful when you are documenting a web application.

Which browsers work?

Chrome and Edge support everything, including screen capture, video recording and the floating controls. Firefox supports capture and recording, with a slightly reduced set of capture options. Safari can open, edit and export guides; its screen capture support is more limited. Screen capture is not available on mobile browsers, though you can edit and export a guide on a phone or tablet.

What can I export?

A web page, a PDF, a Word document, a PowerPoint deck, SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 for a learning management system, a ZIP bundle, Markdown, PNG images of every step, and an editable project file you can reopen later.

Can I use the guides commercially?

Yes. Guides you create are yours. If you insert an image from a third party search inside the tool, that image keeps its own licence, which is shown on the tile before you insert it and copied into the credit line.

How is this different from recording a video?

A recording is useful for watching, but poor for following along, searching and printing. This tool produces both: a recording you can trim and add zoom effects to, and a written guide with a screenshot for each step, which people can scan, translate, print or paste into a knowledge base.
