Snakes and other venomous creatures invading homes during summers used to be thought of as something only experienced by villagers. But thanks to uncontrolled expansion of our urban spaces over the last few decades, snakes have been spotted lurking even in posh high-rises in major cities. For decades, rural communities have employed a traditional remedy using a locally sourced plant known as Maruadona to keep snakes, even cobras, at bay.
This plant is typically found growing wild along riverbanks and pond edges and is also cultivated by some residents. While the leaves of Maruadona are poisonous, the plant has traditional medicinal uses.

As summer commences, the plant blossoms, bearing flowers that mature into basil-like buds by April. These buds are then harvested and hung in homes and cowsheds. The buds emit a subtle yet persistent fragrance throughout the year, believed to deter poisonous animals.
Draupadi Bai, a resident of Sanoda in Sagar city of Madhya Pradesh, emphasises the longstanding tradition of this practice, passed down through generations. She explains that in the past, extreme weather patterns, including heavy rains and harsh winters, increased the risk of encountering dangerous animals.
Traditional methods, like the use of Maruadona, were adopted for protection and continue to be employed today, ensuring the safety and well-being of livestock. Draupadi Bai says that her family continues to plant Maruadona around their home as a protective measure.
