An IndiGo flight 6E 6764 that was travelling from Guwahati to Chennai on Thursday was forced to divert to Bengaluru after the pilot issued a ‘fuel mayday’ call due to insufficient fuel.

ANI reported, citing sources, that the diversion occurred because of congestion at Chennai airport, which prevented the aircraft from landing there in time. Passengers were on board during the emergency reroute. The flight landed safely in Bengaluru at 8:15 pm.

What Happened On IndiGo Flight?

When contacted, IndiGo spokesperson Rashmi told IANS on Saturday that no official statement has been issued regarding the matter. “The pilot issued a ‘Fuel Mayday’ as the flight was rerouted from Chennai to Bengaluru International Airport due to air traffic congestion (ATC),” she said.

The pilot declared a ‘Fuel Mayday’ and communicated that the aircraft required an immediate landing. Consequently, the flight was permitted to land ahead of others, and it touched down safely, she added, according to IANS.

The IndiGo spokesperson also explained that it is standard procedure for pilots to declare a ‘Fuel Mayday’ when requesting an emergency landing due to low fuel levels.

After the emergency landing, the aircraft later resumed its journey to Chennai with a different crew, IANS’ sources confirmed.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash Tragedy

This IndiGo flight’s diversion comes at a time when the nation is still in shock due to the tragic crash of an Air India aircraft in Ahmedabad on June 12.

The ill-fated Air India crash occurred when flight AI171 was travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. The aircraft had departed from the airport at 1:38 pm and crashed shortly after.

There were 292 passengers on board, of whom there was a sole survivor who jumped at the last moment, saving his life. The plane crashed into the BJ Medical College building, causing more injuries and deaths. Since the incident, the government and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have been in action and taking stock of the tragedy.

Earlier on Saturday, the DGCA directed Air India to remove three officials “responsible for operational lapses” from all roles and responsibilities related to crew scheduling and rostering.

According to ANI, DGCA also directs internal disciplinary proceedings against these officials without delay, and that the outcome of such proceedings shall be reported back within 10 days.
