Bohag Bihu 2025 Date And Time: Bohag Bihu is one of the important festivals for the people of Assam. The colourful festival, observed by the Assamese community worldwide, marks the beginning of the New Year as per Assam’s traditional calendar.
The word “Bihu” is derived from the Sanskrit word Bishu. This means “to seek blessings and prosperity from the Gods” before the onset of the harvest season. In Assam, people celebrate three different types of Bihu, depending on the agricultural cycle. Also known as Rongali Bihu, it is considered the most important among them and it’s celebrated in a grand manner.

The festival signifies the time of the harvest season and marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year. Celebrated annually in the second week of April with great joy and fervour, this festival is observed over seven days. This year, Bohag Bihu will be celebrated starting on April 14.

Bohag Bihu 2025: History
It is believed that the history of this festival traces its origins back to ancient times when it was revered as a festival by the agrarian community seeking the blessings of gods ahead of the new harvesting season.
Rooted deeply in Assam’s agricultural heritage, the festival is said to have come into existence when the Assamese people started tilling the lands in the Brahmaputra Valley for their sustenance.
Bohag Bihu 2025: Significance
Celebrated primarily as an agrarian festival, Bohag Bihu holds a lot of significance for the Assamese people and the farming community of Assam. The festival marks the onset of the Assamese New Year and the eagerly anticipated arrival of spring.
On this occasion, farmers express gratitude and thank the god for a good harvesting season while also praying for a better crop in the upcoming season.
Bohag Bihu also serves as a social equaliser, bringing people from all walks of life together to celebrate life’s blessings while putting aside their differences. Besides creating a strong sense of community and strengthening cultural traditions, this day is an occasion to express gratitude and celebrate a prosperous harvesting season.
Bohag Bihu 2025: Rituals
People commence the festival by rising early in the morning, performing ceremonial baths with auspicious pastes. Then, they wear new attire and seek blessings from their elders.
The main Bohag Bihu in Assam is a 7-day-long festival, and each day specific rituals are performed.
The names of each day of the 7-day period are as follows: Goru Bihu, Manuh Bihu, Gohain Bihu, Kutum Bihu, Tator Bihu/Nangolor Bihu, Jiyori or Senehi Bihu, and Mela Bihu or Chera Bihu.
Bohag Bihu 2025: Celebrations
The members of the Assamese community come together, dressed in their traditional attire such as dhoti, gamosa, and saadar mekhela, to perform the Bihu dance while singing the traditional Bihu Geet. Many people also put on new clothes, light bonfires (Meji) and prepare traditional dishes like Larus, Pitha and Xaak to celebrate the festival with family and friends.
